Marathon, 490 BC
In 490 BC the Persian fleet sailed into the bay below this coastline, and the Athenians met them on the plain of Marathon. The Tomb of the Athenians, the Timvos, still rises from the battlefield, 9.5 km (5.9 mi) from the estate.
The run that carried the news to Athens has named every marathon since; each November the Athens Authentic Marathon retraces it.
